Zithromax Medical Uses

Zithromax is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic used for the treatment of the following infections:

  • Acute otitis media (ear infection)
  • Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis (strep throat)
  • Sinusitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Sexually transmitted infections of the cervix or urinary tract: Chlamydia trachomatis, uncomplicated gonorrhea (currently, NOT recommended by CDC); syphilis (an alternative therapy for primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Pertussis (whooping cough)

Azithromycin is a good choice for adults and children who intolerant to other antibiotics.

Azithromycin is suitable for children and infants.

Azithromycin doesn't affect metabolic cytochrome P450 enzymes, and so is not involved in clinically important interactions.

How does Zithromax work?

Azithromycin works by preventing bacteria from multiplying by inhibiting protein synthesis on the ribosome, at the translocation stage.

Zithromax for Streptococcal Pharyngitis (Strep Throat)

About 5-10% of pharyngitis and tonsillitis cases are caused by bacteria, with Streptococcus pyogenes (group A beta-hemolytic streptococci) being the most common cause.

Azithromycin is FDA approved for the treatmesnt of streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat). However, it is considered an alternative antibiotic of choice for penicillin-allergic patients or when first-line treatments (amoxicillin and penicillin) have failed.

Efficacy

Azithromycin (Zithromax) is highly effective in the treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis. According to the clinical research, the efficacy of azithromycin in the treatment streptococcal pharyngitis is over 90% [3].

However, azithromycin resistant Group A streptococci have been reported in the United States, as well as azithromycin treatment failure among children harboring Group A streptococci [1].

Dosing

Azithromycin (Zithromax Z-pak) allows convenient once-daily dosing and a short treatment regimen.

Children over 2 years of age: 12 mg/kg (up to 500 mg) once daily for 5 days.

Adults: 500 mg as a single dose on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2-5.

Zithromax for Urinary Tract Infections

Azithromycin (Zithromax) is NOT indicated for the treatment of UTIs. It is poorly active against urinary pathogens [4].
